First Grade
Welcome to First Grade! In first grade we set the foundation for reading, writing and math. Our curriculum using the HMH Into Reading program and enVision Math help to ensure that our children are prepared for lifelong learning. Some important units that we cover include School and Community, as well as focusing on time, weather and seasons, animal diversity and classification. We use an integrated approach so that the units we cover in reading and writing merge with what we learn in social studies.
First Grade Fun!
There are many fun and amazing activities that we get to participate in throughout the year in first grade. Marquis Studio visits the school for a ten week dance residency. We learn how to Bhangra dance and perform in a show at the end of the residency. In first grade, we go on many trips throughout the school year. At the Bronx Zoo, we learned about animal adaptations and visited various exhibits. We also visited the Environmental Study Center where we learned about and observe insects, mammals, reptiles and fish. We created sculptures from recycled materials at Materials for the Arts. At the movies, we saw the Disney’s Born in China and learned about how animals survive in their natural habitat. When we visited The Queens County Farm Museum, we learned about the life cycle of plants and planted seeds for us to bring home. A special event that the students experience in first grade is Pumpkin Day. We learn about the parts of a pumpkin plant, the life cycle of a pumpkin and complete various pumpkin themed activities. We also visit the P.S. 121 Pumpkin Patch and choose a pumpkin to decorate and bring home. This is a Family Friday event. Parents are invited in to help the class decorate their pumpkins. Parents are invited to the classroom for other Family Fridays throughout the year. Some of these activities include, torn paper flowers, making valentines, and butterfly sun catchers. First grade is an exciting year where we learn and grow.
